feelings of nationalism harbored by that particular countrys population. Nationalism also provides an underpinning for those who wish to rectify what they understand to be "disparities between established political-territorial and
cultural-ethnic boundaries" (Dandeker 22). In other words, nationalism provides a ready excuse to go to war. Even a brief examination of history in the modern era demonstrates graphically how nationalism
has been the catalyst behind conflict after conflict. However, before looking at specific evidence from history as to the destructive nature of nationalism, it is necessary to pin
down exactly what sort of nationalism is being discussed. Historian Michael Ignatieff has pointed out that there are two distinct types of nationalism?"civic" and "ethnic." The United States
is a prime example of a country that honors civic nationalism, which is a conceptualization of the country as all the people who live in the nation and subscribe to
that particular countrys political creed?regardless of their race, religion or ethnicity. In other words, Americans are Americans. They can be Democrats, Baptists, or neo-Nazi. Their lineage can be African, Dutch,
English, Chinese, Korean, or mixed?but they are all Americans. Ethnic nationalism is different. This is the form that usually gets the bad press, and for a very good reason. This
form of nationalism dictates that membership within a particular group of people?in this case a nation?is inherited. The primary form of allegiance is to ones ethnic group, rather
