service. This is presented in the hopes of building a stronger and safer community around the entire nation. But, it is also something that many people feel goes against the Constitution. The following paper examines this issue and suggests that required national service is not a good idea for the nation. National Service: A Requirement for Citizens? The premise of having national service, as noted, is to build a stronger society and individual communities. It is argued that people have too many rights and they do not take responsibility for much of anything. Through national service everyone would ultimately take responsibility at some time in their life. One author notes, for example, "Its an idea worth debating nationally. We have become a nation of people who consider it a right to have every law and institution shaped to our personal preferences and situation, while our responsibilities are limited to a Saturday walk in support of some charity or cause."1 While Wooten is actually even supporting the possibility of the positive nature of service in the armed forces, there are many other ways in which people are looking at national service. But, as one author notes, "Problem number one with grand schemes for universal voluntary public service is that they cant be both universal and voluntary. If everybody has to do it, then its not voluntary, is it?"2 And, if such a service were pressured, and coerced, then it still would not necessarily be voluntary and would not necessarily be of service. It could be "enforced by peer pressure, corporate public service advertising campaigns, earnest reports from blue-ribbon commissions, speeches from politicians, covers of newsmagazines, goody-goody student-council types who infect every college campus, Oprah, Larry King, and so on" and this would not necessarily be something positive for ...
