way we prepare our students to succeed in college and, ultimately, their careers. In an attempt to rectify that fact, a group of state school superintendents has worked side
by side with the National Governors Association to develop a set of national standards specifying a year to year learning strategy for our nations K-12 students. This strategy is
the Common Core Standards Initiative, an initiative that many feel is long overdue. The Common Core Standards are now being proposed for adoption by the states and could feasibly
change the many aspects of the educational arena. These Standards warrant, at least, serious consideration as to the relative benefits and problems that would be associated with their implementation.
A March 14 editorial in the New York Times titled "National School Standards, at Last" is just one reflection of the
approval the Common Core Initiative has met with. Indeed, the recent move towards stricter state standards has been applauded by everyone from teachers to politicians. There are obvious
reasons for that applause. National standards in K-12 education are necessitated for a number of reasons. Heldenfels observes, for example, that while South
Korea achieves a 96 percent graduation rates, US students fall far behind that rate. Academically, Canadian students are typically more than a year ahead of US students by the
time they are fifteen (Heldenfels). Not only are American students behind many of their international peers in such things as graduation
rates and performance in mathematics and the sciences in particular, they is also considerable variation across the country in terms of the education that our students are getting. We
