our privacy is being intruded upon in both our personal and professional lives. Surveillance is now more and more frequently even occurring on our city streets with the use
of surveillance cameras. Even in the face of all the privacy concerns surrounding this issue, however, and even in the presence of certain doubts as to their effectiveness, the
thesis can be presented that: Surveillance cameras are an effective tool in the fight against
crime Goold (21) reports that by 2002 over one million cameras dotted the British urban
landscape alone. He estimated that an additional five hundred cameras were being installed weekly in British towns and cities (Goold 21). In Canada 1200 new cameras were to
be installed by the end of 2005 in Quebec and an additional 3000 in the transport system will be added to the 800 already in operation (Srikanthan 24).
The U.S. is in the process of establishing surveillance cameras in cities across the nation. Although lower courts have consistently ruled that
these cameras represent what amounts to an unauthorized police search, the Supreme Court has failed to confirm (Goold 21). Since 9-11 in particular it seems that the topic of
