is early America and the place is a small Puritan town. He is leaving his lovely wife behind and tells her that he will return soon. He embarks on his
walk in the night, in the dark, and soon comes upon a man who intrigues him but also makes him worry some. The night seems very dark to Brown
as he contemplates religion and all but congratulates himself on being a pious and religious man, coming from a good name. We, as the reader, are never really sure what
Brown is doing out at night, or what his mission may be, but we slowly come to realize that it has some religious importance. We see Brown as a man
who is determined to do what is right and to uphold his religious ideals, also believing that everyone else should do the same. With each step we feel the tension
rise, though we are really unsure as to why the tension is rising. We only know that what will happen will perhaps be frightening and surprising. What happens is that
Brown comes upon a place, a clearing, where many different types of people are all but rejoicing in evil. Or, that is what it seems to be in the eyes
of Brown. It is essentially natural worshipping, however, with many different types of people coming together in a more ritualistic and more paganistic celebration. Brown is surprised, frightened and confused.
However, what really hits home with Brown is that he sees his wife in the midst of these people, acting like a pagan herself. His wonderful, innocent, and beautiful
wife is there in the midst of these animals, in the opinion of Brown. He goes home and is never the same, dying an old and confused, and perhaps insane
