sin and the prevalence of evil in everyday life permeate all of his writing. A survey of some of Hawthornes most famous works shows how the Puritan mindset
on religion was a consistent factor for Hawthorne, as he frequently deals with the ramifications of pride and the danger inherent in becoming overly concerned with the concerns of the
world, which causes the individual to lose sight of Gods directives. Hawthornes protagonists tend to make a fatal error in judgement, for which they pay psychically and emotionally for the
rest of their lives. For example, in his short story "Young Goodman Brown," Hawthorne pictures a young man who is lured by curiosity and his own bravado to meet
the Devil in the woods. His allegorically-named wife, Faith, pleads with Brown not to go, but he is insistent. Browns pride is such that he thinks that he can have
close contact with evil and not be irrevocably changed by it. He thinks that after this one night, he will cling "to her (Faiths) skirts and follow her to Heaven"
(577). While in Satans presence, Brown sees all of the honorable personages from his village at the unholy service of the dark one, and Faith, his wife, being tempted. When
he urges Faith to deny the Devil and look to Heaven, he suddenly finds himself alone in the forest. Although Brown has escaped the immediate threat of temptation, the experience
marks him for life, as he can never again look on the people of the village in the same way. He becomes emotionally isolated and remote from the comradeship that
