Nat Turner was considered incredibly intelligent and quite definitely precocious. His friends, "Commenting on Nats precociousness...remarked that he would never be of any service to anyone as a slave" (Africa
Within). When he was quite young he apparently had visions, which would continue through his life. "Once Nancy [his mother] overheard him telling his playmates about some event that had
happened before he was born. How could he know about that? (Oates 11). Apparently it was a real event or happening and his mother was quite astounded, asking him how
he knew and if someone had asked him, to which he told her "he just knew" (Oates 11). He also apparently picked up reading in all but an instant, surprising
many, and truly leading many to believe there was something very special about Nat (Oates). Then his father died, and shortly thereafter, with one after the other master dying, he
went to live with Master Samuel and he essentially began to learn of the restrictive nature of most slaves (Oates). It was when Nat was 31, in 1831,
that he "received what he believed to be a sign from God (a solar eclipse) telling him that it was time for him and his companions to prepare for the
revolt. On August 21 they began their attempt to overthrow the institution of slavery" (Africa Within). Within two days they had murdered 55-65 white people in the county of Southampton
(Africa Within). But, at the same time, "A family of poor whites, who owned no slaves, was spared" (Africa Within). Interestingly enough, his first victim was Travis, his master
