placement in pediatric patients has been noted as a significant problem in the current literature. Though testing measures have been in place as a component of nursing protocols, assessment tools like x-rays have been less than successful in accurately determining proper nasogastric tube placement for enteral nutrition, including feedings and hydration. Testing for pH variances in aspirated fluid has been noted as an improved method in determining proper placement of nasogastric tubes in pediatric patients. As a result, there is a need for a educational program on the best methods for assessing nasogastric tube placement in pediatric patients, in order to change existing nursing protocols and determine improvements for pediatric patients. This program will be assessed through a qualitative analysis of the two different primary assessment methods, x-rays and pH testing, in order to determine the best method for improving NG tube placement. This program will determine improvements in the number of times that NG tubes are inappropriately placed in pediatric patients. In addition, this study wills how the benefits of this program and the correlation between the outcomes of this educational program and improved NG placement in pediatric populations. Introduction Though pH assessments have been viewed in the current literature as a plausible method for accurately determining nasogastric tube placement in pediatric populations, it is not considered the "gold standard" or primary practice (Ellett, 2004). Instead, the more common nursing practice of using x-ray confirmation has been related as the primary practice to address concerns over NG tube placement (Ellett, 2004). Though x-ray placement should be done at the onset of NG tube placement to determine correct positioning, the use of other techniques to ensure continued correct placement can have better patient ...
