notable of these expert storytellers was Jean Shepherd. In his novel A Christmas Story, the chapter entitled "Duel in the Snow, or Red Ryder Nails the Cleveland Street Kid," the
narrator is Ralphie, a boy growing up during the 1930s who desperately wants a Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas. Analysis of Shepherds tale demonstrates the art of narrative writing
at its finest. Shepherd begins his story by relating how Ralphie, as a grown man, encounters a little old woman wearing a button that reads: "DISARM THE TOY INDUSTRY"
in bold red type (Shepherd). The "little old lady" is vehemently opposed to any toy gun and, when asked what her button means, gives Ralph a lecture about how toy
guns are corrupting the nations youth. This causes Ralph to reminisce about his childhood and the Christmas when he longed so intently for Santa to bring him a BB gun.
This opening illustrates several points made by narrative writing experts. For example, it is recommended that the writer should identify a generalization that allows the writers personal experience to take
on meaning for the reader (Kilborn). The details that the writer offers help to "support, explain and enhance the story" (Kilborn). A narrative essay is written with a tightly
defined point of view, which is often that of the author. By giving "specific and sensory details," the author gets the reader involved in both the sequence of the story
