Grieving over such a loss is characteristically "intensely personal! , unique, " as it also constitutes a "pervasive experience that touches, infiltrates and changes much of a persons life" (Moules; Amundson, 1997, p. 378). Experts emphasize that although grief is typically defined as a "problem," it is important to realize that grief, while personal and intense, is also a normal, healthy response to loss (Moules; Amundson, 1997). Traditional psychotherapeutic language that assigns labels to grief?such as "complicated, compromised, delayed, morbid, dysfunctional, unresolved, or atypical"?create a mindset that pathologizes grief An postmodernist approach to therapy, narrative therapy, looks on traditional practice as something that disregards the uniqueness of the individuals and families involved (Moules; Amundson, 1997, p. 378). A narrative approach to working with the grief caused by separation and divorce allows clinicians and practitioners!24 to respect the tremendous variability in experiences of grief. The research reported by Brown and Burns in 1987 suggests that grief is not a straight linear process?its generally not orderly, tidy, or easily quantified (Moules; Amundson, 1997).
