particular problem. They choose someone who will best suit their needs. Someone who has had problems all of their lives might seek out a psychotherapist who uses Freudian techniques whereas
someone who has been fine all of their lives but is suddenly stuck in a bad situation at work or in a relationship might just want someone to talk with.
The type of counselor and therapy chosen will depend upon the specific situation. In counseling situations, many issues crop up. Counselors sometimes share their own experiences, and although taboo, enter
friendships or romantic relationships with patients. There are many lines that should never be crossed. Hence, a counselor must always be cognizant of the client-counselor relationship and should also do
what is best to serve the clients needs. This means that the counselor has to put the needs of the client before the client-counselor relationship. In other words, there are
some clients a counselor should refuse. Should counselors take a case where there is a communication gap? Perhaps a Chinese woman wants to be counseled but a young counselor
finds that she not only is very different from the client who comes from China and barely speaks English, the psychologist can barely understand what is being said. Short of
hiring a translator, should a counselor take such a case? Such situations do crop up from time to time, but the situations where clients will not be understandable are usually
