with different messages, different themes, and different narrative techniques. In many ways one could argue, that in simplest terms, Austens narrative techniques are basic while Conrads are quite complex. However,
both possess a certain level of complexity, though quite different. With that in mind the following paper contrasts the narrative techniques of Austen and Conrad in their respective works, "Pride
and Prejudice" and "The Heart of Darkness." Austen and Conrad In first looking at, and contrasting, the narrative techniques employed by
Auste and Conrad we offer up the opening lines from each work. Austens novel begins with the following: "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession
of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife" (Austen). Conrads begins with the following two lines: "The Nellie, a cruising yawl, swung to her anchor without a
flutter of the sails, and was at rest. The flood had made, the wind was nearly calm, and being bound down the river, the only thing for it was
to come to and wait for the turn of the tide" (Conrad). From these relatively simple introductions we can immediately see a
difference in the narrative techniques the authors have used. For Austen there is an immediate theme set up, a perspective that offers up the fact this story will clearly be
about relationships and marriage. In Conrads there is great mystery for we are given images of nature, good and bad ("flood," "calm") and provided with the imagery of surroundings. There
is a clear sense of mystery coupled with power presented in Conrads whereas Austens is fairly straightforward and to the point. Throughout Austens novel we are offered, for the
