Sometimes we may have flashback scenes which are easily slipped into this linear style, never truly altering our perception of the time frame within which the story takes place. But, there are amazing films which have the ability to mesmerize and confuse us as they take us through various time periods in a manner that is completely non-linear. These films jump from one period of time to another, never in any noticeably rational manner. Two such films are "Citizen Kane" and "Pulp Fiction." In the following paper we examine the two films individually and then compare and contrast the narrative styles of the two. Citizen Kane "The fresh, sophisticated, and classic masterpiece, Citizen Kane (1941), is probably the worlds most famous and highly-rated film, with its many remarkable scenes and performances, cinematic and narrative techniques and experimental innovations (in photography, editing, and sound)" (Dirks, 2002; citi.html). This particular film is the story of one mans struggle through life. In a brief synopsis we understand that as a young boy he was sent to live with wealthy people, where he gained wealth, education, and the possibility of a future. We note he grows to be a gregarious individual who seems driven to succeed in unusual ways, always seeking some adventure and some challenge. In the end we discover that this need to seek answers and challenges was his way of seeking his place in the world as it involved his past. At the end of his life he was alone, longing for his childhood and the life that could have been his.
