paper presents an examination of the narrative structure of Hemingways For Whom the Bell Tolls. Narrative Structure in For Whom the Bell Tolls by Hemingway
The first thing to be discussed is the exposition of the novel which can essentially be summed up as that element of the novel that sets
the stage for the story, the part of the story that presents the reader with the primary character, in this case a protagonist, and establishes what the story is going
to be about in many cases. In Hemingways novel all of this information is well laid out in the first chapter of the work. The following excerpt offers a very
good look at the main character, Jordan, and his character: "I will let you know when we have studied the bridge. Do you wish to study it now? No. Now
I wish to go to where we will hide this explosive until it is time. I would like to have it hidden in utmost security at a distance no greater
than half an hour from the bridge, if that is possible.... How are you called? I have forgotten. It was a bad sign to him that he had forgotten" (Hemingway
Chapter 1). In this simple excerpt one can see that there is the blowing a bridge in the plans and one can also see that Jordan is perhaps a
