the problem, externalising or objectifying the issues and then deconstructing them in order to reconstruction them. Besley (2002) argues that narrative family therapy challenges the traditional views towards family therapy
with this fluid approach. Narratives looks at the way in which lives and relationships are shaped by and meanings are given to stories and experiences of the past. White
defines the process definitively in the following way "A narrative therapy assists persons to resolve problems by: enabling them to separate their lives and relationships from those knowledge and stories
that they judge to be improvising; assisting them to challenge the ways of life that they find subjugating and encouraging persons to re-author their own lives according to alternative and
preferred stories of identity and ways of life" (quoted Besley, 2002). Narrative therapy is aligned strongly with the practice of family therapy, stories of a family facilitate a contextual
framework and provide a connection to the past which, when used in a therapeutic setting, may help the family members aim a deeper understanding of the current situations. However, the
meaning that is brought to those stories by the family members is likely to reflect cultural influences that have dominated their lives. Certain lifestyles, values and experiences are more likely
to meet with cultural approval than others, while certain lifestyles may meet with subjugation. Interestingly, over time cultural values will change, what are acceptable was subjugated lifestyle choices will adjust.
