often wonder if our ancestors were among those who settled in the Philippines from Asias mainland about 25,000 years before the birth of Jesus Christ. They reached their destination
either by land or by sea, with many of them settling in the remote islands in the far south. The region is remote, volcanic and uninhabitable in several sections,
and particularly vulnerable to natural disasters. Because it is surrounded by water, it should come as no surprise that most of the men were fishermen. There are some
estimates claiming at least 3 million people in the Philippines rely on fishing to earn their livings and support their families (Krinks 129). Because the governments regulation of the
fishing industry strongly favors the wealthy, areas like my Lolas fishing village are very poor (Krinks 131). Homelessness and disease remain constant problems. It was here, in
this environment where Lola was born and lived out her life. My grandmother was the glue that cemented our familys foundation. She was strong because she had to be
in order to survive. There was never a day in her life that was easy; she always worked very hard but because of her pride seldom uttered a complaint.
Like most Filipino girls, she married and became a housewife. Her husband (my Lolo) would travel to faraway places for work, and so the total responsibilities of running
the household and raising seven children fell to her. If the hardships ever grew too much for her, no one ever knew because Lola only ever showed to others
kindness, patience, and an unwavering courage. When her children grew up, married, and began families of their own, Lola remained the central focus in all of our lives.
