West Africa to the U.S. Discussion Since this paper is a personal observation of a friend, the best way to handle it is to put it in first person. Doing
so, if the student chooses this format, can result in something like the following: My friend Gilbert Akitani might not be the first person that would come to mind when
words like "top-notch attorney" and "better than Perry Mason" are used, not because hes black but because hes from Togo, West Africa. Everyone, but especially Americans it seems, thinks that
nobody from a different country can be as good as they are. Gilbert is proving that narrow-minded viewpoint false. Physically, Gilbert has the girls falling over! Hes 63" tall, well-built
and handsome, with a dazzling smile and an elegant way about him. His skin is actually black; the very dark ebony color that is usually found only in Africans from
Africa, not in African-Americans, where there has been a lot of mixture. (Thats not a racist remark, just a statement of fact.) He takes a lot of kidding about being
the next Sidney Poitier and hes got the same sort of star quality, but he just laughs it off. His looks are a great asset, but his personality is even
more charming. He is very open and outgoing, not because it makes people trust him or open up to him during court proceedings, but because thats just the way he
is. With him its genuine, not some kind of calculated approach to get people to do what he wants. He knows that real friends are rare, and so he cherishes
them and treats them with the same love he would a brother or sister. Not surprisingly, he has a wide circle of friends of all races and creeds, men and
