health care for almost two years before I realized that my job is more than just working as an occupational health technician; I am a role model for others.
A sixty five year old woman who I will call "Bernice" helped me understand my role, with an emphasis on the way I am perceived by others. Bernice
had come to the clinic for a physical examination following a back injury that resulted in problems with small and gross motor coordination. Bernices son, Stan, pushed her into
the waiting room in a wheel chair and commented that he was going to get some coffee. He left Bernice in the room, unable to move or to push
herself because of the weakness in her arms. Two other people entered the room, moving around her chair. One young man pushed Bernice out of the way without
asking her permission or even acknowledging that she was in the chair. "Hey, what are you doing?" Bernice asked. "Sorry, but dont just push yourself into the middle of
the room and expect were all going to sit around you. Jeez," the young man chided. Bernice looked at him with astonishment, but did not return a
comment. Another man entered the room and sat in a chair beside Bernice. There was not enough leg room between
Bernices chair and the other chair, and so she was moved again. This time, the older man stated: "Ive gotta move you," and then proceeded to move her,
again without asking. By this time, Bernice seemed frustrated. "I feel like a piece of furniture," she said. At
