in 2001, the country of Afghanistan has become a synonym for the "narco-state and the spread of crime and illegality" (Felbab-Brown, 2009, p. 100). Particularly during the past two years,
the drug economy in Afghanistan has reached new heights and the efforts of the international community, as well as those of the Afghan government, have had little effect. The following
examination of literature indicates the main source of insurgency and corruption in Afghanistan can be traced to the narcotics trade. The International Monetary Fund reported in 2008 that opium
was, by far, the largest cash crop grown in Afghanistan, as the countrys production in 2007 was 8,200 metric tons, which translates into 93 percent of the global market (Katel,
2008). The opium-producing regions that are the most fertile are located in the south and southwest areas of the country, which also constitute the center of Taliban activity (Katel, 2008).
Since the inception of the US presence in Afghanistan, US officials have feared that the roughly $7 billion generated by the heroin trade will be utilized to support anti-American
and anti-democracy factions (Katel, 2005). Robert Charles, who was assistant secretary of State under the Bush administration, said that the terrorist attacks
