self-awareness. However, taken to an extreme, with the preoccupation of self becoming an obsession or compulsion, there can be serious and even deadly consequences. Take the ancient Greek myth of Narcissus, for example. The son of Leiriope, the blue nymph, she consulted the blind oracle Teiresias when her son was a baby to find out if he would live to old age. Teiresias cryptically replied, "Yes, if he does not come to know himself" (Quoted in Hamilton 21). Narcissus grew into a physically desirable young man but because of his "stubborn pride in his beauty," his love affairs always ended badly (Hamilton 21). One day while pausing near a stream after quenching his thirst, Narcissuss eyes happened upon a "beautiful reflection," with which he immediately became mesmerized, blissfully unaware that it was his own image that captivated him (Hamilton 23). He reached out to touch the object of his passion, but could not. Narcissus pondered "how he could endure both to possess and yet not to possess" (Hamilton 23). He pined away for this elusive love he could see but never touch and in his fury and frustration he masochistically beat himself (Hamilton 24). Soon, his youth was gone and in his devastation over this unrequited love, Narcissus plunged a dagger deep within his aching heart and uttered as his last words, "Ah youth, beloved in vain, farewell!" (Quoted in Hamilton 25) This myth suggests the ancient Greeks feared that excessive love might be the undoing of their society, which is ironic considering they reveled in their own social superiority and intellect. But narcissism is a double-edged sword as both Narcissus and ancient Greece discovered - it can propel one to attempt greatness but it can also narrow focus ...
