which affects an ever-growing segment of the population, or one speaks of the inherent centrality perspective that pervades the human race. This is a most interesting phenomena, since narcissism
nearly by definition must exclude those who harbor it from realizing its existence. In other words, those who are narcissistic dont realize it.
According to the following articles, although the authors explore extremely different phenomena, their interpretations are very similar. These authors both discuss the issue of narcissism
from a psychological standpoint, and therefore they examine the psychological effects on both individuals and groups. Summary of Scholars The
journal article by David Barash, entitled "Why We Arent So Special", is a very interesting journey into the idea that man is not the center of the universe, as many
may otherwise believe (Barash). Basically then, he attacks the narcissism of human beings (Barash). His argument is that as human beings, we are essentially pre-programmed to have an
egotistic view of the world (Barash). Barash argues that we are born with "a personal relationship with the universe", and
we suppose that the nature of that is reciprocal, despite any lack of evidence (Barash). Furthermore, he argues that not only is there lack of evidence for a reciprocating
universe, there is a considerable amount of logical argument which dictates the exact opposite (Barash). Just as central to his argument is the whole notion of the centrality of
individuals (Barash). He believes that such a perspective is beneficial for human beings (both as individuals and as a species), but indeed is false (Barash).
