and Napoleons role is at the crux of the culmination of a very bloody but idealistic war. The period between 1789 and 1799 saw the end of the French monarchy
("French" PG). While the revolution began as an attempt to create a constitutional monarchy, by the time 1792 came to a close, demands for reforms resulted in the proclamation of
the First Republic; the violence of the revolution seemed to consume the republic(PG). This effectively helped to open the door to others who wanted control of France. There was a
great deal of uneasiness at the time. The people wanted change. Many events took place which ultimately left Robespierre in control.It is important to understand the power struggle. The
ideals of the revolution were for a government with more equality. People were starving. Further, the power of the Bourbons in France was criticized by the thinkers of the French
Enlightenment (Marshall 18). In fact, Voltaire expressed his desire to see "the last king strangled with the guts of the last priest" (18). What the idealists wanted was to be
rid of the old authoritarianism government but they did not desire the goal by establishing constitutional government exactly (18). They did not want to emulate the Americans across the water.
Rather, they wanted what they called "enlightened despots" like Empress Catherine of Russia or Joseph II of Habsburg (18). They thought that such trustworthy rulers would use their power
to impose rational reforms in terms of education, justice, and the economic system (18). The philosophers considered themselves the proper people to advise the despots of course (18).
