was born.2 Napoleon rose to power by determination and force.3 His desire was to rule millions and he succeeded.4 To ensure his power and influence in Europe, Napoleon wanted to
place family members in key positions, especially on the thrones of Europe and did so through a number of tactics, including marrying royalty from other countries.5 Authors have commented
that Napoleons "dynastic aggrandisement . . . inspired hostility"6 throughout Europe.7 This was true even when he returned to France from exile in Elba and successfully advanced on
Paris.8 Louis XVIII fled but the powers in the rest of Europe reinforced their armies and successfully removed Napoleon from the throne.9 Napoleon Bonaparte had enormous influence on France and
the rest of Europe, "partly by his successes, and partly, as in his unwilling promotion of national consciousness in Germany and Italy, by his failures."10 He was a brilliant military
commander but he also changed the education system, a statesman, a revolutionary who gave France stability for two decades.11 When he conquered Egypt, for instance, he immediately established a "programme
of intellectual and archaeological study of the country."12 He even re-established harmonious relations with the Vatican.13 And, he designed the Code of Napoleon, which is the foundation for civil law
in France today.14 In fact, the Napoleonic Code is the foundation for the civil laws in 25 other countries.15 Napoleons domestic and foreign policies were out of step with the
