hard copy for their bookshelves. Discussion Although the title seems like it might be a study in street gangs, it is really an examination of how the corporations in America
have gained so much power, and whether or not we can have a true democracy when businessmen are in fact running government. Nace argues that democracy is vanishing because the
corporations are running everything and that unless we can turn things around, America as a functioning democracy is at an end. This is not a new argument; there are many
books that make the same claim, and its disheartening to realize that theyre probably correct: if ordinary citizens cannot make their voices heard, there is no chance that this will
be a truly democratic society. Corporations have the money, the time, the attorneys and the power to out-wait the "little guy" who tries to take action against them. They also
have a network of lobbyists, many of them former Congress people, who have the connections necessary to get to the decision-makers. There are many instances of corporations actually writing legislation
favorable to them, though its rarely blatant. Rather, they "remind" the congressman or senator that it was their money that got him elected, and that he promised to help them
in return. A perfect example of the kind of power that can derail good intentions is whats happening right now (May, 2009), as the American Medical Association, the insurance
industry and other special interest groups who want to maintain their profit margins are using scare tactics and outright lies to try and defeat health care reform. This effort is
