There are others that have specific rituals and beliefs involving treatment, and any interference with those beliefs can cause skepticism and non-cooperation. In short, the medical professional and/or the nursing professional needs to understand what he/she is getting into when asked to serve a minority or ethnic franchise. While the heroic vision of the Westernized Peace Corps member bringing his or her medical background and knowledge to the wilds of some jungle community, and having those members accept that knowledge with deep thanks is great for recruitment posters, it doesnt work in real life. For the most part, the knowledge that a nursing professional needs to assist in the care of ethnic minorities is knowledge that custom and ritual differ from Westernized assumptions. This paper, written in tutorial style, attempts to analyze nursing care, using as a springboard a case study of a well-trained nurse who finds herself out of her league somewhat when she is asked to investigate health problems among Native Americans that live on a nearby reservation. The nurse goes through various experiences and must readjust her view of medicine in order to better help the indigenous population on which she is called to serve. Before launching any paper, however, the student must, in the introduction, introduce a theme or thesis that describes to the reader what the paper will be about. In this case, the theme could be that an understanding of cultural mores is essential for the nurse who will be administering to an ethnic minority community.
