be corrupting. No where is this more emotional or passionate than when it comes to children. In this case, the concept of censorship is often based on assumptions that children
must be protected, not only from violence in various media forms, but also sex and other potentially corrupting information that could have a dire impact on their development.
But Majorie Heins, in her book, Not in Front of the Children, takes exception to these particular assumptions by tracing the history of rules
and regulations originally geared to "protect" children, but rather, ended up censoring too much. In this paper, the student is asked to
connect Heins concept with that of violation of Free Speech, and in this regard, the student can use several examples from the book to formulate this essay.
For example, on page 187, Heins mentions the fact that Mainstream Loudoun (a citizens group in Loundon County, Virgina), filed a legal challenge to Internet
filtering in public libraries. Their complaint? The "foul word" filter placed on computers to prevent obscenities from coming through to children also blocked other things, like the infamous poem, the
"Owl and the Pussycat." The reason? The filter perceived "pussy" as a foul or obscene word. In other words, in its guise of "protecting" the children. Further more, a so-called
