Though Jews emigrating from North Africa to France had it fairly good for a long while, that aspect seems to be changing. A "New York Times" article from 2006 postulated a growing problem, that of rising anti-Semitism in Europe, especially France. New York Times reporter Craig Smith, in writing his article, pointed out that one working-class Parisian suburb, populated by North African immigrants, considered the word "Jew" as an epithet; while Blacks and Arabs are on one side of the fence, Jews are on the other. French Jewish children are victims of anti-Semitism as well - the reason for the disdain there is a "widespread belief" that the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks were part of a Jewish plot, and that Jews were warned beforehand (Smith, 2006). Furthermore, as Palestine more and more becomes a sympathetic target, and more Muslims move to France, anti-Semitic feeling continues to rise, especially among the second-generation population in France (Smith, 2006). Many North African Arabs immigrating to France dont have the post-Holocaust guilt of their European brethren. Additionally, these Arabs carry with them anger over creation of the state of Israel (Smith, 2006). Furthermore, its the poorer North African Jews, those who arrived more recently, that have been bearing the brunt of anti-Semitism in recent years (Smith, 2006). Still, one Jew, whose parents immigrated from Tunisia in the 1950s, said she avoids certain neighborhoods and doesnt allow her son to wear a skullcap, in the event he might be targeted (Smith, 2006).
