saying. In this paper, well examine some of the parameters of nonverbal communication and determine how these fit into a business situation. It
would first be helpful to define what, exactly, the experts say about nonverbal communication. Tidwell (2004) defines nonverbal communication as "nonverbal stimuli in a communication setting . . . generated
by both the source/speaker and his or her use of the environment, and that have potential message value for the source or receiver/listener. In other words, nonverbal communication is a
way to send and receive messages without the use of talking (Tidwell, 2004). Nonverbal communication includes, but isnt limited to touch, glances,
eye contact, vocal nuances, pauses in conversation, posture, dress, facial expressions, gestures and proximity (Tidwell, 2004). Hopkins (2004) notes that in business, there are key elements to make or break
attempts at communication in business: these include gestures, movement, posture, facial expression and even written communication. In addition, its been said that those who have "limp" handshakes in a business
sense are those that are perceived as weak, or not to be trusted. Just the opposite is true of a strong handshake, that a strong one denotes confidence and trust
