just as much can be said by facial expressions, gestures and body positions as can be said by the spoken language. When we speak about "gestures," we also speak about
actions, such as gift-giving, which well discuss later on in this paper. In this paper, well compare some non-verbal communication between
the U.S. and Asia. According to Tidwell (2004), non-verbal communication can be a cultural difference as well. In various Asian countries, for example, the process of bowing shows rank in
Japan -- but in the U.S. its simply not done; or if it is done, its considered an affectation (Tidwell, 2004). Instead,
many U.S. citizens use handshakes to greet others. But Asians dont like to shake hands with strangers. Pointing is another cultural difference
-- in the U.S. people point on a regular basis, anytime and anywhere. But in Japanese, people use the entire hand to motion in a general direction (Tidwell, 2004). To
point is considered the height of rudeness among most Asians, as a matter of fact (Tidwell, 2004). Facial expressions are also vastly
different between the United States and Asia. In Asia, its best to maintain as neutral an expression as possible, with some seeing "animated" features as a lack of control (Tidwell,
2004). In the United States, of course, its the opposite, the "poker face" is considered to be somehow sinister, as though someone is hiding something (and more often than not,
with a poker face, someone is trying to hide something). Colors can also have a great deal to do with nonverbal communication.
