late 1800s and early 1900s, mostly in France. From what one can determine about Gauguin, it was that he was surrounded, and purposely sought to surround himself, with art, artists,
paintings, and beauty of every sort. He was well off, for the most part, which allowed him to paint without the usual pitfalls which haunted fellow painters such as Van
Gogh. However, after a disastrous living arrangement with Van Gogh Gaugin set sail for Tahiti and it was there that he wrote his first journal, Noa Noa. Most critics
state that most of his artistic work before he went to Tahiti was not received well. It was as if he were copying the works of others, their styles, their
messages, and none of his own voice was placed into his work. In other words, his work lacked heart. He would find it, it would seem, in the lifestyle of
the Tahitian people. Noa Noa is the private journal and daily sketch book of Gauguin during his time there, though it is highly fictionalized. In fact, it is more than
fictionalized, it is homoerotically based, one has to state. What moves this novel one notch above that of ordinary porn is the depth at which he explores all of the
