little doubt that the employee would be fired. The employee did something wrong, and must take the consequences for his actions. But as
in many cases, behaving in an ethical fashion isnt quite so cut-and-dried. This is certainly the situation with the case study entitled "Who Comes First," from the book Moral Issues
in Business (2009). In this particular situation were introduced to Fred Huggins, a supervisor who must lay off the majority of his 23-person
department to 8 people. The problem with the layoffs, as Fred saw it, was that the company for which he worked was in a rural area of Victoria, in short,
the only local employer with decent jobs. Adding to the problem was a personal situation - Freds brother Ingo was one of the departments staff members.
Furthermore, seven of the staff were from a local organization that provided work experience and income for mentally challenged individuals - these seven employees were definitely
gaining confidence and self-reliance through interactions with the staff. These people worked hard, too. Finally, there was Evelyn Potts, who was caring for both her mother and her five children,
ages four to 10. In this particular case, Fred did nothing wrong, nor did any of his staff. But Fred is now
faced with an ethical dilemma that is not comfortable for anyone. The Ethical Dilemmas Fred is certainly faced with some uncomfortable
