Tiene A Quien le Escriba (No One Writes the Colonel), the reader is introduced to the Colonel. The Colonel goes every day to the post office to see if his
pension check has arrived, but it never does. His wife is frustrated with the fact that it hasnt come, and even more frustrated with the patience that the Colonel shows
in going day after day to the post office. She is still grieving over the death of their son the year before. It can be said that they both grieve
but in their own personal ways. The boys mother openly weeps and wears black, but the Colonel is grim and taciturn and does not express his grief openly, it can
be said. All he has to get him out of bed each morning is the hope that his check will arrive. It soon becomes apparent that they are very poor.
His wife does not seem to be well and is anxious all the time about what is to become of them. Obstinately refusing to believe that the army would not
reward him for his life of service, he stubbornly makes the trek to the post office everyday. This ritual of his, it can be said, is known to the whole
