televised debates between presidential candidates John F. Kennedy and Richard M. Nixon would agree with this assessment. Its been said that though Nixon won in terms of issues, that Kennedy
won in terms of charisma. It could also be said that because the population could actually see their candidates, for the first time, how someone looked, versus the issues, would
tend to be more significant in terms of presidential elections -- which is something that seems to last to this day. In
this paper, well answer some more questions about the Nixon-Kennedy election and its impact on todays politics. 1. Why were Nixon-Kennedy debates significant?
They were significant, on the surface, because it was the first time television was use to explore political stances -- and it has changed the way that politics is
conducted. It also proved (at least to Nixon, and it seems to predecessors), that how a politician appears on television can have more persuasion and sway than what he (or
she) says (Kraus, 1996). It was the first time that the concept of what is seen versus what is heard can influence an election.
Its also interesting to note some other factors -- namely that with television reporters and commentators entranced by Kennedy, Nixon had already lost the election -- though newspaper
and magazine editorials had made him the winner, and favored Nixon (Hernandez, 1994). 2. In terms of the post 1960 elections, both at the presidential and non- presidential levels how
