collection of poems, observed a picture his wife had given him which showed nine horse heads looking down at him. From this simple, ordinary, mundane occurrence, Billy Collins has presented
the public with his next book of poetry called, Nine Horses. What does a book of poetry, with a title about horses, and only a hundred and twenty pages
long have to offer the reader? Plenty, and too much, one has to report. Like that last bite of cake that you know you shouldnt eat, but do anyway, this
book is twenty pages too long, too sweet, too sentimental and too focused on "I" narratives. It has the same effect as too much cake, and as such, overloads the
system. Collins previous collections were almost ZEN in their presentation, allowing for the digestion of the messages, a pondering of their application and a type of child-like wonderment at
the inherent beauty. This collection of poems, on the other hand, are typically American, cramming everything but the kitchen sink (and Im convinced ITS there somewhere) into this collection. The
mish-mashed, eclectic, preponderance of the everyday and the mundane from a personal and limited first person viewpoint leaves one craving the crisp clean lines of his earlier works. Having
said that, however, this is not a book to simply be shunted off to the used bookstore. For all its problems, Nine Horses is still a keeper. His poem, "More
than a Woman" for example, is about that universal phenomenon of a song that gets stuck in your memory and continues to replay, until it drives you crazy(Collins 14). These
songs only become more ingrained into your mind, he suggests, the more you attempt to remove them, making them a part of your character. On a deeper level, this poem
