In addition to making acquisitions to add strength to its portfolio (such as its recent acquisition of Umbro), the companys management knows when to shed companies that might be dragging down its collection (such as the sale of Exeter Brands in 2007) (Nike Inc., 2009). In this paper, well examine the history of this shoe manufacturer and discuss how it went from turning out interesting-looking sneakers as a fashion statement to becoming such an iconic brand. Well also examine Nikes path to the future. As of now, the company is restructuring to meet the economic slowdown worldwide - a move that will likely mean laying off up to 4% of its 35,000-employee workforce (Nike Inc., 2009). But one thing well see in examining the companys history, is that it is a survivor. History Mile runner Phil Knight and track coach Bill Bowerman met in the late 1950s at the University of Oregon (Nike Inc., 2009). Bowerman, who liked to fool around with track designs, partnered with Knight in 1962 to launch Blue Ribbon Sports, geared toward making quality running shoes (Nike Inc., 2009).
