wealthy. As with many theories, however, not all of it is true. Certainly, globalization has brought more foreign direct investment to various countries. But many times, those benefits arent trickling
down to the population at large. Instead, horror stories about abuse and exploitation tend to abound. The apparel industry has gotten in
the worst; Wal-Mart underwent a huge public relations flack when it was revealed that its Kathy Lee Gifford womens clothing line was being manufactured in Asian sweat shops.
But the bar for the poster child of What Can Go Wrong with Globalization was set by NIKE Inc., which got its start making
neat sneakers, and which today is a multi-billion-dollar corporation. NIKEs decade-long denial of reports of abuse, exploitation and terrible working conditions in factories throughout Asia dogged the company during the
late 1990s and into the 2000s, sparking not only terrible media attention but outright student boycotts and protests at Niketowns across the United States. NIKE made its predicament even worse
by sidestepping the issue and blaming it on its contractors. It was only when the spotlight became too intense that NIKE took steps to implement its "Code of Conduct" not
only among its suppliers and contractors, but also the factories that are subcontracted to. In this paper, well examine a case of
global outsourcing gone awry. Even to this day, NIKE continues to live down the stigma of being a corporate exploiter, a "sweatshop" employer that cares for nothing other than its
