But Nike has been known for other things as well -- most notably, the use of sweatshops in least developing countries to manufacture some shoes and apparel. Since the
late 1980s, the company has come under media fire for passively accepting employee abuse by its contractors. Although the company has decried such abuses publicly, it has done little
to try to rectify them. Even the introduction of its Code of Conduct has done little to prevent employee exploitation. This
paper will examine a case study dealing with this very issue -- and will determine if Nike has actually taken advantage of trying to enforce its Code of Conduct. Overview
- Codes and Sweatshops According to the case study, Nike, Inc. was "founded on a handshake" (Sethi). This particular phrase was
the beginning of what is Nikes Code of Conduct (Sethi). The main issue of the Code involves operating businesses with fairness, integrity and equal opportunity for all individuals (Sethi).
Because the main goal of Nike is to "enhance peoples lives through sports and fitness," the companys Code of Conduct states that every opportunity is taken to operate in a
fair, honest and ethical manner (Sethi). In addition, the Code of Conduct expected Nike subcontractors to act in the same way -- in fact, the Code states and that
