As such, then, if one wants to understand the novel, one must understand why Newgate prison played such a significant role, what its reputation was during the time in which Defoe wrote, and how it played a symbolic role in the novel. The prison itself got its name from the fact that it was located near the front gates of the city, which had been replaced frequently(Dunebin 114). Thus, it was called new gate. The general procedure was to take the guilty to a church service the day of their execution, during which time an open coffin was placed on a table in front of them(Dunebin 114). One can only imagine the psychological terror that this must have created. The story of Moll flanders is about a beautiful woman who is born into the harshness of poverty, inside the prison of Newgate. Her life begins and ends in Newgate. Before this end, however, the story will find Moll meeting and surviving nearly every terrible sort of life circumstance one can imagine for a woman. And, yet, she manages to succeed and achieve. One of the overall motivations for Molls criminal lifestyle is that she is determined that she will not be penniless as her mother and father must have been. Neither she nor her children would be penniless. Early on she begins to understand that her beauty could be used to great advantage, and to this end, she plied her trade for many years. Later, when it was possible, she married a rich husband. In fact, she married several times, each one better off than the next. However, Molls greed was legendary.
