been in play for some time. The only thing the inflated stock market did was give a superficial euphoria that almost anyone could make money overnight by investing in a few stocks. Franklin D. Roosevelt ran for president of the United States in 1932 (when the United States was already in the Great Depression) with the idea that he would promise a "New Deal" to the American people1. The basics of the New Deal, according to Roosevelts campaign, involved relief programs, programs to increase employment and to provide aid to industrial and agricultural interests that had been particularly hard hit by the Depression2. During Roosevelts first 100 days in office, he convened Congress in a special session and launched his New Deal by pushing through many bills3. Many of these bills (and agencies created by the bills) were called "alphabet soup" agencies because they all had acronyms4. The Agricultural Adjustment Act (AAA) was geared to help American farmers by stabilizing prices and keeping the lid on overproduction5. The AAA was the first example of direct subsidies paid to farmers for not planting crops6. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) attempted to foster employment while promoting environmental conservation7. Young men were recruited to plant trees, clear beaches and build wildlife shelters8. National Industrial Recovery Act (NIRA) established the National Recovery Administration (NRA) allowed American industry and businesses to set up a series of codes that would regulate prices, industrial output and even general trade practices9. The federal government, in response, agreed to enforce the codes and suspend any type of anti-trust legislation10. ...
