in New York City where the Republican National Convention was to be held. Who are these new protestors many wondered. The New American Peace Movement and its mobilization to oppose
the ongoing war on terrorism, namely in Iraq, is unique in many ways. In short, the New American Peace Movement is NOT the typical protest group such as one saw
in the sixties and seventies. More versatile, globally connected, technologically savvy, this new generation of protestors are not only effective, but gradually expanding their sphere of influence past US boundaries.
THE OLD PEACE MOVEMENT One cannot really begin to explain the new movement without remembering the good, the bad, and the ugly of those protest groups who have gone
before. This is because, in part, the new protest groups have expanded on some of the principals of the past groups, improved upon the methods and tactics that did not
work, and have discarded the ploys which gave protest groups of the past bad names and worked against their cause. Many of the protest groups of the sixties and
seventies were, of course, protesting the wars in Korea and Vietnam. Much of the same candor and rancor, language and arguments exist to oppose the United States continued occupation in
Iraq. Most turn to the Just War theory to prove their point, arguing that Vietnam was not a justified war, and neither is the war with Iraq. A just
war is not started or initiated by a need to acquire more land or to fight over possession of perceived value (like oil), but rather is a decision that is
based on some principle such as self defense or an initial defensive action to prevent an attack. War may also be said to be just when it is in protection
