Token Ring, FDDI and wireless for tying networks together? The one thing all of these interesting-sounding words have in common is that theyre network architecture standards. Network architecture, in general,
refers to that networks overall structure, which would include topology, physical media and methods of channel access. With this in mind, lets get
back to our question. Topology in network design is the networks virtual shape (or structure) (Mitchell, 2010). The key here is "virtual," just because computers on a network are arranged
in a circle, doesnt necessarily mean they are on a ring topology. Bus networks rely on a single common cable connection, or backbone,
to connect all devices (Mitchell, 2010). The main advantage with a bus topology is that its easy to install and doesnt require as much cabling (Mitchell, 2010). This topology, however,
works well with only a limited number of devices (Mitchell, 2010). Furthermore, if the backbone falls apart, so does the network. Star topologies,
most commonly found in home networks or even small business networks, rely on a central point of connection (known as a "hub") to which other devices connect (Mitchell, 2010). Devices
are typically connected to that main hub (which could be an actual hub, switch or router) with UTP Ethernet (Mitchell, 2010). The disadvantage of this particular topology is that it
requires more cable (Mitchell, 2010). The benefit is that if a star cable network fails, it wont take down the entire network with it (Mitchell, 2010). If the hub fails,
