life and culture still manages to survive to this day, regardless of numerous attempts to erase it. CREATION MYTH Each culture has its own version of how they came to exist on the Earth. The Hopi are no different. Their creation myth states that in the beginning the people existed, but had no name. They were immortal and were expected to live in harmony with one another. They lived in a paradise where there was no illness, no death, no hunger and no cares. The only catch was that they were given rules to live by, which they decline to follow. As a punishment they were thrown into flesh covered bodies and became mortal. Their story does not end there, however. When the people found themselves in bodies and mortal they were unsure of how they were supposed to live. Some of the people determined to live simply, in harmony with the things that they had once known in the spirit. Others used their intelligence and abilities for ill. The Great Spirit visited the people. He divided them into groups and placed ears of corn in front of each. As each moved forward to claim certain ears of corn, the Great Spirit gave them names. Most of the groups grabbed the largest ear of corn for themselves, but one leader remained until all the rest had chosen. He moved forward and chose the smallest ear of corn, though there were larger ears of corn to be had. To these people the name Hopi was given. It means, humble and peaceful or little ones.
