apprised - mainly about foreign policy goals - is through the National Security Strategy, a document that discusses foreign policy and foreign policy themes. The most recent National Security Strategy
was released in May 2010, and outlined President Barack Obamas goals and objectives on an international stage. Obama is not the first president
to develop a National Security Strategy - this is, in fact, mandated via a 1986 law requiring the President to provide Congress with an annual strategic statement1. The main goal
of the document is to set priorities within the government and communicate them to Congress, U.S. citizens and the world2. President George W. Bush issued two such strategies in 2002
and 2006, with the latter focused on the struggle against "militant Islamic radicalism"3. The main idea behind the NSS is to put into
place strategies and plans to protect the United States both at home and abroad through recognizing the "fundamental connection between our national security, our national competitiveness, resilience, and moral examples"4.
According to the specific NSS document, the approach toward national security involves a better foundation for American leadership, strengthening the U.S. economy (by boosting education and human capital and achieving
a balanced growth throughout the economy), developing a better infrastructure and to promote American values through example such as not condoning torture and pursuing justice as outlined in the U.S.
