for many reasons, but the two main reasons are to ensure a level playing field and to ensure the drivers -- and crews -- safety. Also, as technological advances in
auto design continue, rules are changed and cars redesigned to give the fans more of a reason to come to the track.
However, there is little doubt that every time a NASCAR rule changes, the teams have to fork out money to support it. Each new engine, new car design, requires designs
and redesigns, meaning more R&D and more funds put into the cars so they remain competitive. The most recent innovation, one familiar
to race fans, is the "car of tomorrow." Long-time race owner Jack Roush likes the fact that COT is geared to cut down on the number of cars that the
team will need (New York Times). The theory behind the Car of Tomorrow program, which was launched in the late 1990s,
is that teams could save as much as $1 million annually, per car, by 2010 (DiPrimio, 2). According to NASCAR, the cost savings will come from standardizing equipment (DiPrimio, 2).
Track-specific cars will be things of the past, and crews wont be able to fool around with car bodies or aerodynamics (DiPrimio, 2). The playing field will be leveled, with
driver ingenuity being the difference between a win or a loss. The idea of standardization works will with, for example, Southwest Airlines,
which cuts costs by flying only one particular airplane -- the Boeing 737. This type of standardization allows the airlines to train one brand of pilot to fly one type
