there can be made a great study of the narcissism which is displayed by the main characters. Originally, the term, narcissism is based on the story by the Roman poet,
Ovid. According to the tale, Narcissus was the son of Cephissus and Liriope. A seer told them that their child "would live to an old age if it did not
look at itself"(Ovid 1998). Because Narcissus was very handsome, many maidens and nymphs fell in love with him, but he rejected them all. One of these nymphs, named Echo, was
so despondent after his rejection that she retreated to a desolate place and faded away until all that was left of her was a slight whisper in the wind. Hearing
the poor girls cries, the goddess Nemesis caused Narcissus to fall in love with his own reflection. Drawn to his own reflection, he refused to leave it for a minute.
As a result he died of starvation(Ovid 1998). According to Sigmund Freuds book, The Freud Reader, narcissism boils down to an unhealthy kind of self-love. In a normal person,
the libido directs its energies toward an object or thing, including ones love-object which may be a person. However, with the narcissistic person, the libido attaches itself to the ego
instead of an external object, which according to Freud is what causes narcissism to develop(Freud 1995). The tale of the Cask of Amontillado begins during carnival season where the
reader is introduced to Montressor. Montressor is upset because another man, Fortunato has insulted him obliging Montressor to avenge his honor. However, he does so in a most cunning way.
