based on what they want to impose (Wild et al, 2007). There are a number of barriers to trade; these include trade tariffs, such as the imposition of tariffs on
imported steel by the US. The barriers are not only formal barriers, but issues such as language and culture can also present a barrier (Wild et al, 2007). Advantages
and disadvantages of being a member of NAFTA and ASEAN The major advantages of being a member of a trading bloc can be seen in the lowering barriers of trade
between members so both importing and exporting between companies that are both in member states some major advantages over external competitors due to less bureaucracy and fewer trade barrier which
can include financial savings if there are not tariffs to be paid. However, there can be some disadvantages, the reduction of trade tariffs increase free trade movement, but can also
increase competition from other companies in the same area. There may also be politically barriers created that can make it more difficult to trade with companies in non member states.
It is also believed by some commentators that free trade agreements that result in asymmetries can have negative impacts on some economies where jobs move to the lowest cost country.
In NAFTA there is only the aim of free trade, in ASEAN there is a model more similar to the EU where there does appear to be a move towards
