book, Nada, explores a young girls search to that question. This book has been called autobiographical in nature, however in many ways it can also be said to be symbolic
of the spiritual decimation following civil war in Laforets country. Many of the experiences which Laforet, herself, experienced would be woven into Andreas searching. It has been stated that in
any good novel there is a type of structure, a sequence, which the main character goes through, a type of transformation. This begins with the character wanting something, then being
denied that something. In the end, the character either gets what she has been desiring, or she has decided that she no longer wants what she originally desired. Andreas search
parallels this structure in that at the beginning of the novel she desires only to study writing (called letters) at the University. In order to do this she will have
to stay with relatives who live near the University. However, her Aunt and Uncle have created a completely dysfunctional existence within their home and Andrea finds herself nearly suffocated while
she lives there. In sharp contrast is the atmosphere of the University. Here ideas are abundant and rampant. She is able to feel as if she may become someone
and overcome her family and poverty. Andrea is in search of self definition at this point, though she is not consciously aware of it. Andrea is painfully passive in this
story. Culturally she has been brought up to submit to authority, especially male authority, and as such even when she is being treated badly, or when she is being asked
