in such stories. Hansel and Gretel are almost killed, but they get away only because they themselves commit manslaughter. While it is clearly a case of self-defense, these broad minded
parents have caved to the notion that violence should be eliminated from the childrens repertoire entirely. It has also been suggested that Sleeping Beauty is based on the true
tale of a child who was raped. In any event, whether these stories have validity, or are inherently violent, parents should not run from them, at least according to psychologist
Bruno Bettelheim. To Bettelheim (1976), the older fairy tales provide a basis for teaching children lessons and facts of life early on. They all have woven into the pages,
true life lessons. There is often an emphasis placed on doing the right thing, or protecting oneself. Often, it is the case that the ending is happy. Hansel and Gretel
escape. The Prince finds Cinderella. Dorothy gets to go home. However, some contend that these happy endings are most destructive. In fact, the feminist cause is dead set against such
stories that depict women as helpless, or looking for a Prince charming. The same people who say that the stories are too violent often complain that fairy tales are sexist
as well. However, if one can get beyond the stereotypes which are so often contained in these works, and see them for what they actually are, they might just
