a woman who stood up in a world of men, arguing for the proper burial of her brother whom she had felt deserved better than to be treated as a
traitor. The following paper examines the myth and legend of Antigone, with a discussion of Sophocles play as well. Myth of Antigone
"Antigone was as bright an example of filial and sisterly fidelity...She was the daughter of Oedipus and Jocasta, who with all their descendants were the victims of an unrelenting
fate, dooming them to destruction" (Logia.com). Oedipus was a man who was told a prophecy wherein he would kill his father and marry his mother, which he ultimately did without
knowing. When he discovered this he gouged his eyes out and began wandering. "Antigone, his daughter, alone shared his wanderings and remained with him till he died, and then returned
to Thebes" (Logia.com). Various circumstances led to the deaths of her brothers, with one of them being left to the vultures and the dogs and it was ordered that
no one touch him (Logia.com). Antigone heard of this and knew full well that her brother deserved just as noble a burial as the other brother who had died
(Logia.com). "Unmoved by the dissuading counsel of an affectionate but timid sister, and unable to procure assistance, she determined to brave the hazard, and to bury the body with
her own hands" (Logia.com). She was caught in the process of doing this and was ordered to be buried alive because she
clearly went against the rules. "She justifies her action, asserting that she was bound to obey the eternal laws of right and wrong in spite of any human ordinance" (Sophocles).
