simply assume he was a kind and gentle man who came from nothing and ended up as one of the best Presidents history has known. People envision him as a man who fought hard for injustice against slavery, and a man who stood his ground for those less fortunate. However, as is the case with anyone in history, there are myths and there are realities. The following paper examines 4 myths and illustrates their realities. Myth and Reality: Abraham Lincoln As with any historic figure, or even a modern figure still alive, not all truths about an individual will ever be known. As such there are generally common beliefs about one person or another and all information examined seems to support such beliefs. In the case of Lincoln there are many different perspectives in relationship to myths. For example, some believe that Lincoln was always supportive of abolition and others say that is a myth, yet present their own myth that perhaps Lincoln was nothing but a mean spirited man. With such possibilities in mind the first myth to be examined is that which addresses how Lincoln was always a man who fought against injustice and for the downtrodden. One author notes that, "However successful he may have been, Lincoln the young attorney, like the young politician, was not quite the man of principle he would become" (Ewers, 2005; 66). In essence, many believe he was a man who took on cases and clients that had a real moral cause but in truth he "represented people across the philosophical and political spectrum--from murderers to farmers fighting over cows, from adulterers to doctors accused of malpractice" (Ewers, 2005; 66).
